and all it takes for our downfall is one yank of the plug
but still we like to insist that ain’t never gonna happen
to all of our precious little devices, nary giving a shrug
using cell phones as alarm clocks while we’re nappin’

you write but you don’t jot it, preferring to type instead
you talk but you don’t speak, unless it’s to send a text
you scan but you don’t read, a holiday book – inn. dead.
you lust but you don’t love, googling for porn as you sext.

and all it takes for our downfall is one yank of the plug
you wouldn’t know what to do with yourself in the dark
when you can’t take a “feeling-mad” selfie of your mug
as inability for instant gratification sends you into a snark

you step outside pissed off at the world for no good reason
and you rush into stores just like everyone else to pillage,
rioting the streets with a destructive rage. it’s open season.
and all it takes for you to rape what you stake … is nil – age.

and all it takes for our downfall is one yank of the plug
so you set fire to edifices when you can’t get a single bar
and consider it your due when you ain’t nothin’ but a thug
in your thousand-dollar suit playin’ at being some baa-d czar

then power is restored and you head back to your gig on wall street
passing yourself off as this oh-so-great law-abiding community saint
when you ain’t no better than a bully thieving a kid’s halloween treat,
eating away at it like it ate you up when you got no signal. how quaint.
